June 16, 2023 - Yosemite National Park officials report that it can be easy to miss the small details when constantly looking up to the great granite cliffs and roaring waterfalls of Yosemite. Upon close inspection of the underside of bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), a watchful eye can find ladybugs (Coccinellidae), also known as lady beetles, hibernating in large clusters called aggregates.

Beginning their life in fields and valleys as larvae, ladybugs migrate to higher elevations to feed on aphids and pollen that sustain them during their overwinter dormancy. Mature ladybugs release pheromones that signal their location to other individuals and it is believed the aggregates they form are a means of sharing resources, including mates, regulating body temperature, and increasing their defense from predation.

Though these photos were taken a week ago, it is uncommon to find them still aggregating in June, and with warmer temperatures forecast, ladybugs will leave their dormant state, and take the park by swarm. 

Perhaps you have come across these red and black clumps, or observed something else in the park that you could have just as easily missed. There are many small wonders here to experience; you just have to be prepared to look.
