June 17, 2023 – Fresno Police Department officials report that shortly before 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 27th, 2023, officers from the Central Policing District responded to 247 East Olive Ave regarding a shooting victim. As officers arrived, they located 34-year-old Shavar Smith, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. Smith was transported to CRMC and was listed in critical condition. On Wednesday, June 7, Smith died at CRMC due to his gunshot wound.
Utilizing video surveillance obtained during the investigation, homicide detectives identified the shooting suspect as 37-year-old Celestino Chavez. Chavez, a validated gang member on Post-Release Community Supervision, was determined to be in custody at the Fresno County Jail for an outstanding felony warrant. On Thursday, June 15, 2023, detectives added murder charges on Chavez.
