Update Per Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office: Tuolumne County Sheriff Reports Missing Swimmers Body Has Been Recovered from Lake Don Pedro
June 21, 2023 - Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Friday June 16th at about 12:30 in the afternoon, deputies responded to Don Pedro Lake, near South Bay and Rogers Creek for a report of a man who was last seen swimming in the water and was missing. TCSO deputies and Calaveras County Sheriff's Office boat patrol deputies utilized a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and drone during their search.
Due to water depths in the area the man was last seen reaching approximately 250 feet or more, TCSO requested assistance from agencies with specialized equipment. Over the weekend and into Monday boat patrol deputies from TCSO, Sacramento County Sheriff and Alameda County Sheriff continued to search for the man utilizing a ROV from @Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, a tow fish (deep dive sonar device) and ROV from Alameda County Sheriff's Office and Human Remains Detection (HRD) K9 from Sacramento County SO Search and Rescue (SAR). As of yesterday, 6-20-23, the man is still missing.
We want to remind the public to be extremely cautious around waterways in Tuolumne County this year. When boating always remember to have appropriate safety equipment on board, especially your type IV throwable device, a piece of safety equipment designed to throw to a person in the water. Also consider wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD), also known as a life vest, while swimming. Although it is not required for adults to wear a PFD while swimming, it will help keep you safe while in the water. Lastly, prior to hitting the water it is wise to take a boater safety course even if you are not the boat operator.
