June 30, 2023 - Fresno County Sheriff's Office officials report that on June 27, 2023, around 8:15 a.m., a female county employee was at the corner of Fresno and M FCSO MontalvoStreets waiting for the crosswalk light to change.  At this time, a transient by the name of Alonso Montalvo ran up to the young woman and forcefully tried ripping her purse away from her arm.  She yanked her purse back and was able to get away from him.  Fortunately, a Fresno County Sheriff correctional officer was walking in the area.  He witnessed this strong-armed robbery attempt and was able to quickly grab hold of Montalvo and detain him in front of the Fresno County Jail.

Once brought into the jail, records showed the 29-year-old Montalvo is a registered sex offender and had three active outstanding warrants.  One of the warrants was for a CDCR parole violation, meaning a hold has been placed on him and he is ineligible to bail out of jail at this time.  The bail on his other charges totals $535,000.  Montalvo has an extensive criminal history dating back to 2015.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds you to stay vigilant whenever you are out and about.  Safety tips include:  Walking with another person whenever possible, parking in well-lit areas, keeping your head up and avoiding distractions such as talking / texting on the cell phone.  You may also want to consider carrying a legal personal safety product to defend yourself.  If you do feel you are in danger, dial 911 immediately.
