July 23, 2023 - SAN FRANCISCO - The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will host a free webinar for its new Equity and Access (E&A) Grant Program. This innovative program PUC logowill provide $30 million in funding for community-based organizations (CBOs) and California Tribes to participate in CPUC processes and improve access to clean energy programs for underserved and underrepresented communities.

BACKGROUND

In 2022, the Legislature appropriated $30 million in the Budget Act of 2022 (AB 179) for grants to California Tribes and CBOs for participation in CPUC decision-making processes and supporting activities. The grant program includes:

  • The Public Participation Grant Account provides compensation for participating in CPUC activities such as workshops, panels, and working groups.
  • The Equity, Engagement, and Education Grant Account will award grants up to $200,000 for the purpose of building CBO, Tribal, and community capacity to participate in CPUC decision-making processes via methods such as hiring staff or implementing community education campaigns.
  • The Clean Energy Access Grant Account will award grants up to $500,000 to provide assistance to access three CPUC clean energy programs—Microgrid Incentive Program (MIP), Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP), and the Technology and Equipment for Clean Heating (TECH) Initiative.
