July 24, 2023 - Yosemite National Park officials report that earlier this month, we lifted all seasonal climbing closures that were in place to protect peregrine falcons and golden eagles at a vulnerable point in their life cycle. During nesting season, biologists identify peregrine nesting areas and close these areas to climbing and slacklining activities. These areas remain closed until peregrine chicks have fledged and dispersed. Despite a record-breaking winter, causing a pair located at higher Cathedral Rock to nest with 3 feet of snow next to their ledge, Yosemite’s peregrine falcons had a great breeding season. This year, Yosemite had 15 confirmed nests, 18 breeding pairs, and 25 confirmed fledglings.

Of particular interest is where peregrines are choosing to nest, especially when a historically used site is unusable. This season we saw pairs occupying approximately 20 different territories throughout the park, with one new territory established in Wawona. In addition, a pair that has nested on The Rostrum for 19 years used a new nest location and 40% of the nests located in Yosemite were used as secondary, alternate nesting locations for pairs.

This display of resilience amidst atypical weather conditions is a great reminder of how majestic peregrine falcons are, and also, how far we’ve come in restoring this species. A huge thank you to NPS biologists, climbing rangers, fire and aviation crews, protection rangers, volunteers, and the Yosemite climbing community for your enthusiasm and dedication to helping to protect the park’s peregrine falcons.

Happy climbing!
