July 24, 2023 - Initial attack activity remained light across the nation over the weekend, however, wildfire activity is picking up. Eight new large fires were reported yesterday, four in Arizona, firefighters credit nifcone in Idaho, two in Oregon, and one in Wyoming. Nationally, 36 large fires have burned 189,685 acres in 10 states. Since January, 28,470 wildfires have burned 847,349 acres across the United States, still below the 10-year average of 32,686 wildfires and 3,393,317 acres burned.

As fire activity picks up around the nation, it may be tempting to get a bird’s eye view flying your drone around a wildfire…PLEASE DON’T!  Fire officials urge members of the public not to fly Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or drones over or near wildfires. Unauthorized drone flights pose serious risks to firefighter and public safety operations and the effectiveness of wildfire suppression efforts. When your drone is in the air near a wildfire, our aircraft must be grounded, putting the lives of firefighters at risk and can cause wildfires to become larger and more costly. Know before you fly!

The United States continues to support fire suppression efforts in Canada. Since May 8, the U.S. has mobilized a total of 2,051 personnel to Canada which includes: fire suppression crews (1,387 personnel), 205 individual overhead, 119 smokejumpers and 11 smokejumper spotters, two helicopters with 21 rappellers and 3 rappel spotters,10 engines (50 personnel), and 21 incident management teams (255 personnel).

To learn more about the significant fire potential in your area, check the Outlooks from the National Interagency Coordination Center Predicted Services.

Weather

Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are expected from the Southwest and southern California through the Four Corners, central Great Basin, central Rockies, and into the northern Rockies. Gusty outflow winds will accompany some of these thunderstorms. Elevated to critical fire weather conditions will develop across the western and northern Great Basin and Inland Northwest through the northern Rockies due to west-southwest sustained winds of 15-25 mph gusting 30-40 mph amid minimum relative humidity of 5-20%. Showers are expected across western Washington and northwest Oregon amid onshore flow. Well above normal temperatures will continue for much of the West, especially the Intermountain West and southern California, and across much of the Plains, Texas, and into the Midwest. Thunderstorms are likely along the Gulf and East Coasts, with scattered thunderstorms and showers over the Midwest and Great Lakes. Above normal temperatures and scattered to widespread thunderstorms will continue over much of the Alaska Interior.
