July 26, 2023 - Nationally, 39 large fires burned 219,637 acres in nine states. Six new large fires were reported yesterday, two in California two in Washington one in Idaho and one in Montana. More firefighters credit nifcthan 7,200 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. Since January, 29,118 wildfires have burned 949,207 acres, still below the 10-year average of 33,520 wildfires and 3,534,123 acres burned. 

High temperatures are plaguing many geographic areas. Vegetation dries out quickly in hot, windy conditions. Please, use caution when working and recreating outdoors. A small spark in dry conditions can easily ignite a wildfire which can rapidly burn a long distance. The United States continues to support fire suppression efforts in Canada. Since May 8, the U.S. has mobilized a total of 2,125 personnel to Canada which includes: 70 fire suppression crews (1,430 personnel), 211 individual overhead, 119 smokejumpers and 11 smokejumper spotters, two helicopters with 29 rappellers ,16 engines (70 personnel), and 21 incident management teams (255 personnel).

Weather

Dry and breezy weather leading to elevated and critical fire weather conditions are expected across much of the Great Basin, in the Cascade Gaps, and into the northern Rockies, northern High Plains, deserts of southern California, portions of the Southwest, and western Colorado. Above normal temperatures will continue across the Desert Southwest, southern California, Texas, the Plains, and into the Mississippi Valley and Southeast, with relatively dry and breezy conditions also expected in portions of Texas into the Mid-Mississippi Valley. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will continue across the Southwest, greater Four Corners, central Rockies, and possibly into far southern and eastern Nevada, southeast and central Idaho, and southwest Montana. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms and showers are forecast over the Midwest and Great Lakes, including severe thunderstorms, and along the Gulf and southeast Atlantic Coasts. Well above normal temperatures and thunderstorms will continue across much of the Alaska Interior.
