July 28, 2023 - Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Wednesday afternoon, our Sheriff Enforcement Team executed a search warrant in the 900 block of Vassar Avenue in Merced. During the search warrant, Deputies located approximately 60 people working at the site processing several hundreds of pounds of finished marijuana product.

Our Investigations Bureau arrived on the scene and determined these individuals were victims of human trafficking. Our Investigators learned that these individuals arrived at the property several days prior with the promise that they would have a good-paying job and a place to stay. Once there, they were forced to process marijuana while staying in horrible living conditions to pay back the individuals that brought them across the border.

The men and women on the property were not injured and were offered several resources. Child Protective Services was contacted due to a juvenile working in the operation; the juvenile was released to their parent. Our Animal Services Bureau responded and rescued three goats and two dogs due to the animal's inadequate care.
