August 2, 2023 - Nationally, 67 large fires burned 388,245 acres in nine states. Nine new large fires were reported, three in Montana, two in Oregon and one in New Mexico, Wyoming, California firefighters credit nifcand Idaho. More than 10,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.

The United States continues to support fire suppression efforts in Canada. Since May 8, the U.S. has mobilized a total of 2,258 personnel to Canada which includes: 73 fire suppression crews (1,511 personnel), 216 individual overhead, 119 smokejumpers and 11 smokejumper spotters, two helicopters with 29 rappellers, 20 engines (94 personnel), and 24 incident management teams (278 personnel).

Weather

Hot temperatures will continue across much Texas, Oklahoma, and Lower Mississippi Valley with widespread temperatures above 100oF. Southerly sustained winds 12-22 mph will develop across much of Texas Oklahoma as well, and minimum RH below 30% will remain widespread. Very dry conditions will continue across much of the northern Intermountain West with widespread minimum relative humidity below 20%. Dry and breezy westerly winds are forecast along the east slopes of Cascades and Sierra and into southeast California and western Arizona. Abundant monsoon moisture will lead to scattered wet thunderstorms in the central and eastern Great Basin into the central Rockies. However, isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are possible on the fringes of this moisture across portions of western Nevada into southeast Oregon and central Idaho, then in New Mexico and far eastern Arizona. Scattered to widespread thunderstorms will develop across the central Plains into the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians, with isolated thunderstorms developing in the Southeast and Florida, while scattered showers are forecast for the northern Great Lakes and northern New England. Above normal temperatures will continue for much of Alaska with isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms for south-central Alaska and the far eastern Interior.
