August 11, 2023 - Ten new large fires were reported yesterday, six in Alaska, two in Texas and one in Idaho and Oregon. Nationally, 88 large fires burned 577,396 acres in 12 states. More than 11,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. This includes 15 incident management teams, nearly 240 crews, 458 engines. 76 helicopters and one MAFFS C-130 airtanker and support personnel.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has activated Emergency Support Function 4 (ESF4) to assist with the wildfires burning in Hawaii.
So far in 2023, 33,700 wildfires have burned 1,546,630 acres. This is still below the 10-year average of 36,431 wildfires and 4,217,043 acres burned. Hot, dry, and breezy conditions will continue to impact portions of the southern Plains, Texas, and Louisiana. A more typical trade wind pattern creating localized dry and breezy conditions will occur across the Hawaiian Island chain. Monsoonal moisture creating a mix of wet and dry thunderstorms will remain over portions of the Four Corners states. Remnants of Tropical Storm Eugene will continue to edge northward over California creating an isolated mix of wet and dry storms favoring the central Sierra. Warming and drying will continue across the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. Alaska will experience warmer and drier airmass found across the North Slopes and northern Interior and a cooler and more moist one across southern areas with scattered thunderstorms across much of the Interior. Scattered to widespread thunderstorms will impact the Midwest to the Southeast with severe thunderstorms most likely across the Midwest.
