August 14, 2023 - IOWA STATE FAIR GROUNDS – U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has issued the following statement on the Justice Department naming Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the Biden Investigation.

“Since at least 2019, the FBI and Justice Department have possessed glaring evidence of criminality involving the Biden family’s business ventures. Despite repeated assurances that U.S. Attorney Weiss had full authority and independence to pursue all the facts, whistleblowers and a botched sweetheart plea deal told a much different story. Given the underhanded plea deal negotiated by the U.S. Attorney from President Biden’s home state, it’s clear Mr. Weiss isn’t the right person for the job.

“The special counsel has a duty to pursue all the facts and provide greater transparency about the true scope of his review. There’s no longer any excuse to ignore critical details that were left out of the plea deal – many of which have long been in the public domain. I’ll continue to pursue the facts as I have for years, and Congress is not going to tolerate further delay tactics and obstructive conduct by the Justice Department,” Grassley said.

Grassley first began investigating the Biden family’s foreign business entanglements in 2019. He and Sen. Johnson issued reports in 2020 highlighting financial transactions with foreign business partners that were flagged as potential money laundering.

In 2020, Grassley warned that the Biden family’s foreign work appears to have violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

In March and April of 2022, Grassley and Johnson gave three speeches on the Senate Floor and made public bank records connecting the Biden family business to China-based entities.

In October of 2022, Grassley publicly disclosed that the FBI possessed voluminous evidence of potential criminality in the Biden family’s business arrangements.  That same month, Grassley and Johnson shared all of their investigative material with Weiss’ team, though none of it was relied upon for the charges in Weiss’ failed plea agreement.

In July, Grassley released an FBI-generated document from 2020 alleging Joe Biden’s involvement in a criminal bribery scheme with a foreign national. It remains unclear what, if anything, Weiss’ team has done to investigate further.
