August 14, 2023 - Texas and Alaska each reported one new large fire yesterday. Nationally, 85 large fires burned 546,988 acres in 12 states. More than 10,300 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. This includes 17 incident management teams, about 200 crews, 413 engines. 89 helicopters and one MAFFS C-130 airtanker and support personnel.
So far in 2023, 34,234 wildfires have burned 1,617,369 acres. As hot and dry conditions prevail in several states, wildland firefighters need your help to prevent wildfires. From campfires to camp stoves, it's important to understand how these things have potential to cause a wildfire. Use existing fire rings, and make sure your campfire is out completely and cold to the touch prior to leaving or sleeping.
The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook and other valuable resources are available on the National Interagency Coordination Center website. Listen to the latest wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast for August through November.
Hot, dry, and breezy conditions will develop ahead of a cold frontal passage across portions of New Mexico, Texas, and the lower Mississippi Valley. A mix of wet and dry thunderstorms will be found along and ahead of this cold front and impact portions of the Four Corner states as well as Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley. A mix of wet and dry thunderstorms will also affect large portions of California and Nevada although they will be slower moving with a nighttime thunderstorm threat across northwest California. The heat wave will strengthen across the Pacific Northwest and portions of northern California and provide a thermal trough induced critical fire weather pattern, especially across the Coastal and Cascade Ranges. Temperatures will moderate some across Alaska with continued scattered shower and thunderstorm activity. Heavier concentrations of wetting thunderstorms will be found across portions of the upper Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic and large portions of the Southeast.
