August 24, 2023 - Currently 75 wildfires have burned 625,387 acres in 14 states. Two new large fires were reported yesterday, Mississippi and Texas each had one. More than 18,250 wildland firefighters credit nifcfirefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents. This includes 18 incident management teams, 389 crews, 1,140 engines, 100 helicopters and two MAFFS C-130 airtankers.

All 10 geographic areas are reporting large incidents. With so many of our firefighters and support personnel working on incidents, they need your help to prevent human-caused wildfires. Check for fire restrictions before you go to your favorite place on your public lands. If campfires are permitted, recreate responsibly by use existing fire rings, and make sure your campfire is out completely and cold to the touch prior to leaving or sleeping.

Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. For the latest on closure status, recovery, and travel please visit: Wildfires affecting Hawaii - Hawai'i (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i.

Weather

Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will develop over northwest California into south-central and southwest Oregon. Isolated to scattered mainly dry thunderstorms are likely to develop overnight across from the Cascades westward to the coast over Oregon and southern Washington. Hot, dry, and locally breezy conditions will continue across the southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley, with record high temperatures likely in the Lower Mississippi Valley and Deep South. Isolated thunderstorms are possible along the northern Gulf Coast with new ignitions possible as well. Breezy and dry westerly winds with gusts up to 40 mph are likely across much of north-central and northeast Montana. Scattered to widespread monsoon thunderstorms will continue in the Four Corners states, with scattered to numerous thunderstorms in the Great Lakes, Northeast, and Mid- Atlantic. Across Alaska, strong downslope southerly winds will develop north of the Alaska Range, but temperatures will remain seasonable with elevated relative humidity.
