August 30, 2023 - Nine new large wildfires were reported yesterday, two in Idaho, Louisiana and Montana, and Arizona, Mississippi and Texas each had one. Currently, 88 large wildfires have burned 597,424 acres in 15 states. More than 20,349 wildland firefighters and support personnel are working on large incidents.
More than 20,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country. Weather and fuels conditions continue to bring high potential for wildfire activity to several states in the country. Wildland firefighters need your help to prevent wildfires. Know before you go! Pay attention to fire restrictions, and monitor smoke advisories. Always recreate responsibly!

Hurricane Idalia will make landfall in the Florida Big Bend this morning, with strong winds, heavy rain, and significant flooding likely along the path of Idalia into southeast Georgia and the coastal Carolinas, along with storm surge up to 15 feet along the Gulf Coast of Florida. To the west, sustained northerly winds 12-25 mph with higher gusts will develop across east Texas into the Lower Mississippi Valley amid minimum relative humidity of 18-30% creating elevated to critical fire weather conditions. Breezy and dry north to northeasterly winds will continue across much of northern California during the day, strongest in the Sacramento Valley and North Bay mountains. Breezy and dry southwesterly winds will also develop across the Mojave and Sonoran deserts into the southern Great Basin and much of Wyoming. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue across much of northwest Oregon and northern and western Washington while rain continues across north Idaho, and northwest Montana. Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will develop across portions of southeast Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Showers and thunderstorms will develop in the Northeast along a cold front, with cool and dry conditions for much of the Midwest.
