September 3, 2023 - Currently, 74 large wildfires have burned 487,140 acres in 13 states. Three new large wildfires were reported, Montana, Oklahoma and Washington each had one. More than 17,600 wildland firefighters and support personnel are working on large incidents. To date, 39,851 wildfires have burned 2,078,998 acres.
The predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for September through December. The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i. Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will spread over much of the Great Basin into the central and northern Rockies and Inland Northwest and onto portions of the northern Plains. Some of the thunderstorms will be capable severe winds and hail, especially over the Great Basin. Monsoonal moisture will shift northward as a warming and drying trend expands across the Southwest, while isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms remain likely in portions of the Southwest. Scattered showers also remain likely along and west of the Cascades. Hot, dry, and breezy conditions will continue across much of the Plains into the Midwest and southern Rockies, and hot and dry conditions will remain across most of Texas and the Lower Mississippi Valley. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected along portions of the western and central Gulf Coast into the Lower Mississippi Valley and central and north Texas.
