September 4, 2023 - No new large fires were reported yesterday. Currently, 72 large wildfires have burned 489,280 acres in 12 states. Nearly 17,500 wildland firefighters and support personnel firefighters credit nifcare working on large incidents. To date, 39,965 wildfires have burned 2,081,130 acres.

As you pack up your camp site to head home after the holiday weekend, please make sure your campfire is completely out and cold to the touch, the safety chains on your trailer are securely fastened, and that you pack out what you packed in. Please #RecreateResponsibly and #LeaveNoTrace. 

The predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for September through December. The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i. Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. Weather

Hot, dry, and breezy conditions will continue across much of the southern and central Plains into the Midwest, New Mexico, southern Colorado, and the rest of Texas ahead of a cold front. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop across east Texas through the Lower Mississippi Valley, ArkLaTex, and into the Mid-Mississippi Valley and Ozarks. Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected across the northeast Great Basin and central and northern Rockies onto the central and northern Plains. Lingering showers are also likely across the Pacific Northwest, especially along and west of the Cascades. Gusty winds are likely through the Columbia Gorge and in portions of the northern Great Basin, but relative humidity will be 30-50%. Below normal temperatures will continue across much of the West, with above normal temperatures extending from the Midwest and Great Lakes through the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
