September 8, 2023 - Fresno Police Department officials report that on shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, officers from the Southeast Policing District responded to a report of an accident at a bus stop at Cedar Avenue and Tulare Avenue. Initial reports indicated that a vehicle driving recklessly had collided into the bus stop where students were waiting. The accident injured 11 students, ranging in age from 14 to 17 years. The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old male juvenile, was seen fleeing the scene immediately following the accident.
Community members followed the fleeing suspect, providing the police department with updates on his location. The suspect was seen getting into a white colored vehicle occupied by two females. Undercover officers quickly located the vehicle and followed it until marked patrol units could conduct a traffic stop on it. Inside the vehicle, officers located the juvenile suspect, his sister and his 36-year-old mother, Yesenia Renteria. The juvenile suspect was taken into custody for felony hit and run and felony DUI charges.
After interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance camera footage, Yesenia Renteria was taken into custody for Penal Code 32, Accessory After the Fact, a felony, and booked into Fresno County Jail.
