September 8, 2023 - Currently, 72 large wildfires have burned 468,876 acres in 14 states. Five new large fires were reported, three in Texas and Arkansas and Utah each had
one. About 13,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the nation.
Fall is a great time to get out and enjoy public lands. Be aware of your surroundings if venturing into an area where a wildland fire has burned. Burned areas host many safety hazards. Know before you go and recreate responsibly.
The predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for September through December. The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i. Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. Well above normal temperatures and low minimum relative humidity of 10-30% will continue across the Southwest into the southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley. Isolated dry thunderstorms will develop along the eastern Mogollon Rim into west-central New Mexico and west Texas. Scattered thunderstorms will develop across southern Oklahoma into east Texas and Louisiana as well, with some storms becoming severe. Above normal temperatures will spread across much of the West with light winds. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms will develop over central and southeast Idaho into Montana and northern Wyoming, with the thunderstorms becoming wetter as they move into the northern Plains in the evening and overnight. A cold front will stall along near the East Coast with scattered to widespread thunderstorms and showers, and severe thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Below normal temperatures will continue over much of the Great Lakes into the Ohio Valley.
