September 11, 2023 - Currently, 69 large wildfires have burned 475,924 acres in 13 states. Two new large fires were reported, one in Washington and one in Texas. About 12,400 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the nation. This includes 247 crews, 609 engines, 101 helicopters, and 21 incident management teams.
Since January 1, 41,944 wildfires have burned 2,191,140 acres. This is below the 10-year averages of 42,989 wildfires and 5,705,696 acres burned.
The predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for September through December. The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i. Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. Isolated to scattered, mainly wet thunderstorms will develop across much of Nevada into the Four Corners states, with widespread thunderstorms from the Front Range into the southern Plains and central Texas. Near normal temperatures with higher daytime relative humidity is forecast across the southern half of the West into the central and southern Plains. However, above normal temperatures and dry conditions will continue across south Texas into the Lower Mississippi Valley and Southeast. Above normal temperatures are also forecast across the northern Intermountain West, with breezy west winds gusting to 30 mph in the Cascade Gaps and Columbia Basin. Widespread showers and scattered thunderstorms will occur along and behind a cold front from the Mid- Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes, while below normal temperatures and scattered thunderstorms develop behind the front from eastern North Dakota into northern Minnesota. Scattered thunderstorms will develop along the East Coast and across Florida.
