September 18, 2023 - Two new large wildfires were reported one in Montana and one in Oregon. Sixty-seven large wildfires have burned 480,604 acres in 12 states. More than 9,000 wildland firefighters credit nifcfirefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the nation. This includes 155 crews, 411 engines, 83 helicopters, and 14 incident management teams.

Since January 1, 42,689 wildfires have burned 2.2 million acres. Wildland firefighters need your help to prevent wildfires this fall. Whether working to create defensible space around your home, mowing the lawn, or pulling your dirt bike over to the side of the road, if you live in a wildland area you need to use equipment responsibly.

The predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for September through December. The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i. Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. Weather

Upper-level troughing will deepen over the northwestern US, with an upper low sliding south off the central California coast. Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected from the Cascade Gaps onto the Columbia Basin and through north Idaho and much of Montana. Wind gusts of 20-45 mph amid minimum relative humidity of 8-25% and above normal temperatures will develop across these areas. Additionally, dry and breezy conditions will overspread the rest of the Inland Northwest and Idaho into portions of Wyoming. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are expected across the central and northern Sierra into far northern California, the Sierra Front, and possibly far southern Oregon. Isolated to scattered mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are also likely across portions of northern Nevada, east-central Idaho, southwest Montana, and northwest Wyoming. Light showers are likely in northwest Oregon, western Washington, and northeast Washington into northwest Montana. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected over much of Utah, the Colorado Rockies, New Mexico, and from southwest Texas extending northeast through western Oklahoma, Kansas, eastern Nebraska, Iowa, and southern Minnesota. While dry post-frontal conditions will spread across much of the Southeast, showers and thunderstorms remain likely in South Florida and the Northeast.
