September 28, 2023 - Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Deonte Lee Murray was found guilty by a jury for attempting to murder two Los Angeles County george gasconsheriff’s deputies while they sat in their car outside the Martin Luther King Jr. Transit Center on September 12, 2020.

“Today, justice has been served. The man responsible for ambushing and shooting two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies during a crime spree has been found guilty. This verdict reaffirms our commitment to protecting those who serve and sends a clear message that acts of violence will not go unpunished. We stand united, honoring the bravery of our law enforcement and upholding the principles of justice in our community,” District Attorney Gascón said. “I want to commend the work and dedication of my office’s Crimes Against Peace Officers Division for their tireless efforts and commitment to securing this conviction.”

Murray (dob 6/2/84) was convicted in case TA152697 on all 10 counts, including three counts of attempted murder, carjacking, robbery, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and illegal possession of firearms, at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Compton Branch.

The case was heard by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Connie Quiñones.

On September 1, 2020, the defendant confronted a man in Compton, shot him in his leg and then stole the victim’s vehicle. On September 10, 2020, the defendant shot a man outside the Compton Courthouse. Then on September 12, 2020, the defendant walked up to a car occupied by two sheriff’s deputies outside a Metro station and opened fire. He then fled the scene. Both deputies were seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

Murray was found and arrested on September 15, 2020, three days after he shot at the deputies.

Murray faces a sentence of life in state prison.

The case was prosecuted by LADA’s Crimes Against Peace Officers Division and investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
