October 3, 2023 - No new large wildfires were reported yesterday. Currently, 35 large wildfires have burned 381,659 acres in 11 states. About firefighters credit nifc4,500 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents nationwide. Since January 1, 45,663 wildfires have burned 2,493,041 acres. This continues to be below the 10-year average of 45,954 wildfires and 6,212,689 acres burned.

The predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for October through January. The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available.

During hunting season, dirt bikes, ATVs, and side-by-side vehicles are used to travel to hard-to-get places. If your plans for getting outside include some motorized adventure, please be cautious when driving or parking on dry grass or brush.  It's also important to be aware of animal habitats including water and food sources, nesting areas and sensitive terrain. Never chase animals or shoot a firearm from a vehicle. Please hunt and recreate responsibly this fall.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) continues to work with state and local agencies in Hawai‘i. Some national parks in Hawai‘i have been affected by wildfires. Weather

Scattered to widespread thunderstorms will develop on much of the Plains, with severe storms most likely from southwest Texas into Nebraska along and ahead of a cold front. Farther to the east, dry and breezy conditions will develop on eastern portions of the southern and central Plains into the Southeast, Ohio Valley, and Midwest amid above normal temperatures. Additionally, some dry and breezy post-frontal conditions are likely in portions of the Southwest. Isolated to scattered showers are likely from the Pacific Northwest through the northern Intermountain West onto the northern High Plains, with continued below normal temperatures across the West. Dry and breezy north-northeast winds are expected across portions of northern California and southwest Oregon and will likely continue overnight on some mid and upper slopes.
