October 13, 2023 – Mariposa, CA - Mariposa County officials report that in cooperation with Sierra Foothills Conservancy, the local Prescribed Burn Association, Mariposa County logo 2020and the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation the County is currently working to implement key recommendations in the Mariposa Creek Parkway Master Plan, which includes conducting environmental restoration activities in the creek corridor. As part of this restoration, the county and its partners are conducting a controlled burn in the Phase III segment on permitted burn days from November 15th to December 15th.

The purpose of the controlled burn is the eradication of invasive plant species from the creek corridor. The goal is to create a healthy riparian habitat for essential California species to reclaim. This project is being coordinated by the Mariposa County Planning Department in cooperation with Sierra Foothill Conservancy, the local Prescribed Burn Association, and the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation.

The prescribed burn will occur on county-owned parcels along the Mariposa Creek corridor generally between 6th Street and Joe Howard Street. Activities will be concentrated to the south west of Jessie Street and north of Stroming Road. The type of burning that will occur is pile and broadcast burning.

The following days are scheduled if current weather conditions remain stable and resources are available:

November 15 - December 15

Burning will take place between 9:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. as soon as conditions allow and will continue until complete. Though the fuel type and burning activities are not expected to produce significant smoke, there is a possibility that smoke could affect roadway conditions. There are no plans for slowing traffic or lane closures unless for an emergency.

Please be aware of possible smoke in the town of Mariposa on these dates and burning debris along the creek. This is a control burn so please do not report the burn if you are in the project area.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Hannah Harrison, Community Design and Development Planner for Mariposa County, at hharrison@mariposacounty.org.
