November 5, 2023 - Los Angeles Police Department officials report that Chief Moore announced the tragic news that LAPD Officer Darrell Cunningham, while off-duty, was killed in a traffic collision after a suspected drunk driver crashed into his car. There were two passengers in Officer Cunningham's vehicle, one tragically killed and the other seriously injured.
The suspected drunk driver was also injured and is in police custody.
Officer Cunningham may you and your friend both Rest in Peace.
Chief of Police Michel R. Moore held a press conference Saturday on the death of West Los Angeles Area Police Officer II Darrell Cunningham.
“Today, we mourn the loss of Police Officer II Darrell Cunningham, Serial No. 43884, West Los Angeles Area. While off-duty, he and two passengers were involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Lindley Avenue at approximately 1:15 A.M. One passenger was pronounced deceased while the other was transported to a local hospital with significant injuries. The driver of the vehicle that struck Darrell was traveling in excess of 100 mph at the time of the collision and is under investigation for vehicular manslaughter.
I am authorizing the wearing of mourning bands in his honor. Darrell is survived by two children ages 3 and 6, a fiancée and his parents.
The investigation is in the skilled hands of the Department’s Multi-Disciplinary Collision Investigation Team. Valley Traffic Division and other Department resources are providing support to ensure any needs are met. As we continue to grieve, please remember to stay safe and support each other.
