November 5, 2023 - National Weather Service Hanford Office officials report a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the higher elevations of the Mariposa, Madera, and Fresno County portion of the Sierra Nevada from 4:00 A.M. Monday morning until 4:00 P.M. Tuesday afternoon.

Motorists should be prepared for slick road conditions and travel delays.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cooling trend is expected today through Wednesday. By Wednesday
afternoon, high temperatures will be around five degrees below
normal for this time of year. Precipitation is likely north of
Fresno County tonight and Monday. This precipitation will spread 
southward Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Precipitation 
chances will end Tuesday afternoon.

.DISCUSSION...
A feeble trough of low pressure will sag southward tonight and
Monday. Precipitation associated with this trough of low pressure
should remain north of Fresno County tonight and Monday. This
precipitation will spread southward Monday night into early
Tuesday morning ahead of an approaching cold front. The cold 
front will sweep through Central California Tuesday afternoon or
Tuesday evening. Snow levels will start at around 8000 feet
tonight, before falling to about 7000 feet Monday night. There is
a 75% probability of two inches of snow or more at Tioga Pass
Monday and Monday night. There is a 17% probability of six inches
of snow ore more at Tioga Pass Monday and Monday night. As a
result, snow amounts at Tioga Pass should range from as little at
two inches to as much as six inches Monday and Monday night.
Strong, gusty winds are possible in the Mojave Desert Slopes
Monday afternoon into Monday night. A Wind Advisory may be
required. Here are probabilities of rainfall amounts of one tenth
of an inch or more at select locations in the San Joaquin Valley
from 10 AM PST Monday, November 6th, 2023 to 10 AM PST Tuesday,
November 7th, 2023: 

Merced - 61%
Fresno - 51%
Madera - 51%
Reedley - 41%
Hanford - 36%
Bakersfield - 31%
Visalia - 31%
Lemoore - 31%
Porterville - 26%
Delano - 26%

A low amplitude ridge of high pressure Wednesday and Thursday. A
trough of low pressure may approach Central California Friday or
Saturday. A cooling trend is anticipated today through Wednesday.
By Wednesday afternoon, maximum temperatures will be around five
degrees below their typical values for the first half of November.
Temperatures should remain below seasonal values Thursday through
Saturday. Of note, locations in the San Joaquin Valley that
receive wetting rainfall Monday into early Tuesday morning will 
be susceptible for the formation of dense fog Wednesday night and
Thursday night.

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions will prevail across Central California today. MVFR
or lower conditions are conceivable north of Fresno County tonight
in and near showers. The possibility of MVFR or lower conditions
will increase south of Fresno County Monday as precipitation
spreads southward.

.AIR QUALITY ISSUES...
On Sunday, November 5th 2023, fireplace/wood stove burning status
is: no burning unless registered in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, 
Merced, and Tulare Counties, as well as in Sequoia National Park 
and Forest. In addition, burning discouraged in Kern (Greater 
Frazier Park Area).
