Man Arrested After Vehicle Pursuit
November 7, 2023 - Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office officials report that on October 30, 2023, at about 10:00 p.m., deputies observed a red truck driving recklessly near the intersection of Chicago Ave. and Vernon Ave. in Modesto. The vehicle's driver was later identified as Sergio Lopez, a 19-year-old resident of Modesto.
Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop, but Lopez failed to yield, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. Lopez fled from deputies, driving towards Downtown Modesto, and entering Highway 99. Once on Highway 99, Lopez fled at over 100 miles per hour. The Sheriff's Department Air Unit was able to begin monitoring Lopez from above. Lopez continued driving southbound on Highway 99 toward Turlock at a high rate of speed. Once in Turlock, he attempted to take the W. Monte Vista Ave. exit but, while doing so, lost control of his vehicle and rolled over onto the embankment. Lopez exited the wrecked car and was taken into custody. No other motorists were involved in the collision.
Lopez was transported to Doctor's Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released for booking at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center. Lopez was booked for several violations: driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, felony evading, probation violation, and reckless driving.
All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
