Caltrans traffic advisory
TRAFFIC ADVISORY 
Rest Area, Lane & Ramp Closures 
Interstate 5 and State Routes 59, 99 & 140 for December 17-23, 2023 

December 15, 2023 – MERCED COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), State Route 59 (SR-59), SR-99, and SR-140 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows:

INTERSTATE 5

  • Full closure of the John C. Erreca Rest Areas on northbound and southbound I-5 beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, through February 29, 2024.

        o ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists are advised to use either the Westley Rest Area (San Joaquin/Stanislaus County line) or the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line). Electric vehicle charging stations are available at the Westley Rest Area.

STATE ROUTE 59

  • One-way traffic control from Vassar Avenue to Dickenson Road for utility work beginning Wednesday, December 20, through Thursday, December 21, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

STATE ROUTE 99

  • Full on-ramp closures on southbound SR-99 at Shanks Road Over-Crossing for construction work on Monday, December 18, through Friday, December 22, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

STATE ROUTE 140

  • One-way traffic control at Sante Fe Grand Road for guardrail work beginning Monday, December 18, through Friday, December 22, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at Weir Ave for guardrail work beginning Monday, December 18, through Friday, December 22, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at Howard Road for guardrail work beginning Monday, December 18, through Friday, December 22, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at N. Cunningham Road for guardrail work beginning Monday, December 18, through Friday, December 22, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control from Mud Slough Overflow to North Bridge Mud Slough for utility work on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control from Rosa Road to State Route 165/Lander Avenue on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. This work is scheduled to take place as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues.
