TRAFFIC ADVISORY 
Rest Area, Lane & Ramp Closures 
Interstate 5 and State Routes 99 & 140 

January 5, 2024 - MERCED COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will perform various closures on Interstate 5 (I-5), State Route 99 (SR-99) and SR-140 for maintenance and construction operations. Work is scheduled to occur as follows:

INTERSTATE 5

  • Full closure of the John C. Erreca Rest Areas on northbound and southbound I-5 beginning Monday, April 4, 2022, through February 29, 2024.

          o ALTERNATE LOCATIONS: Motorists are advised to use either the Westley Rest Area (San Joaquin/Stanislaus County line) or the Coalinga-Avenal Rest Area (Fresno/Kings County line). Electric vehicle charging stations are available at the Westley Rest Area.

STATE ROUTE 99

  • Full on-ramp closure on southbound SR-99 at Shanks Road Over-Crossing for pavement work beginning Thursday, January 4, through Friday, January 5, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Full on-ramp closure on southbound SR-99 at Hammatt Avenue Over-Crossing for pavement work beginning Monday, January 8, through Friday, January 12, 2024, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Full off-ramp closure on southbound SR-99 at Hammatt Avenue Over-Crossing for pavement work beginning Sunday, January 7, through Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
  • Full on-ramp closure on southbound SR-99 at South Avenue Over-Crossing for pavement work beginning Monday, January 8, through Friday, January 12, 2024, from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

STATE ROUTE 140

  • One-way traffic control from Kibby Road to North Orchard Drive for utility work on Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
  • One-way traffic control at Schmidt Road for guardrail work beginning Monday, January 8, through Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at Linden Avenue for utility work beginning Monday, January 8, through Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • One-way traffic control at N. Orchard Drive for striping work beginning Monday, January 8, through Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Motorists should expect 5-10 minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. This work is scheduled to take place as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues.
