Buena Vista Elementary School Sits Less Than 200 Yards Away From The Spill

February 8, 2024 - Bakersfield, Calif. — A burst pipeline at the intersection of Panama Lane and Buena Vista Road has been leaking crude oil for days, prompting an investigation by the Bakersfield Fire Department and other officials. The cause of the spill is currently unknown.

Although fire officials determined there was no immediate threat to public health, westbound Panama Lane has been closed around the spill. Buena Vista Elementary School sits less than 200 yards away from the spill.

In response, Sierra Club representative Mercedes Macias released the following statement:

“Spills like this one are the most blatant, obvious reminders that fossil fuels are just one accident away from wreaking havoc on our soil, water, and environment. These risks only become more serious when our oil and gas pipelines are near homes and schools. We must stay committed to finding safer, affordable alternatives that utilize renewable energy.”
