February 22, 2024 - SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) has introduced Assembly Bill 2927, a measure to Kevin McCarty California Assemblymemberguarantee personal finance education for all California high school students. AB 2927 will require California high schools to provide a one-semester, stand-alone course in personal finance to all students as a graduation requirement.

“Financial literacy is a necessity for California students. Most go into college or the workforce without any knowledge of personal finance,” said Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. “This is a time where young people are bombarded with credit card offers which can lead to thousands of dollars in debt. Taking a finance class in high school can help students make smart money decisions that will benefit them throughout their adult life.”

Tyton Partners report recently found that the lifetime benefit for students taking a one-semester high school personal finance course is $127,000. The report also found that guaranteeing personal finance education in high school can positively impact the economic development of a state and positively impact the financial security of future generations.

“I commend Assemblymember McCarty’s commitment to personal finance education and support the intent of AB 2927,” said Tim Ranzetta, co-founder of Next Gen Personal Finance. “This legislation represents a significant investment in our state's future, empowering every high school student with the knowledge necessary for financial independence and stability.”

High school students would be required to complete one semester course of a financial literacy class. This course could be an already existing finance class that meets the A-G requirements of the University of California and the California State University, or a locally developed class approved by the school district or charter school.

The course will be a graduation requirement starting the 2026-2027 school year
