March 6, 2024 - Mariposa County Health & Human Services officials report that the recent storms have left many in our community with damage to homes and properties, but the additional moisture from all of the storms can impact the inside of your home too.  Mold caused by flooding or excess moisture produces mycotoxins (aka mold toxins). Molds produce allergens (substances that can cause allergic reactions) and irritants, specifically in at-risk and sensitive individuals, but can affect all.

If you see or smell mold in your home, follow these tips:

▪️ Wear personal protective equipment to prevent inhaling or touching mold or when cleaning.

▪️ Identify and stop the source of moisture.

▪️ Close off the impacted area and take steps to dry it out rapidly.

▪️ Discard of impacted items/materials such as:

  - Drywall, Particle Board, and Insulation

  - Carpet and Rugs

  - Fabrics, Paper, and Cardboard

▪️ Use detergents recommended for mold removal.

▪️ If the area is greater than 10 square feet, consider hiring a professional mold removal contractor.

For more information on how you can protect yourself from mold and what to do if it is in your home, check out this guide from the California Department of Public Health: https://www.cdph.ca.gov/.../CCDPHP/...ADA.pdf.
