May 29, 2024 - There are currently 8 large, uncontained wildfires being managed under full suppression strategies across the country, including two in California, one in
Colorado, one in New Mexico, three in Arizona, and one in Florida. There are four additional large wildfires being managed with strategies other than full suppression, including one in Texas, one in Florida, one in New Mexico, and one in Alaska.

Since January 1 2024, 15,558 wildfires have burned 1,921,280 acres. This continues to be below the 10-year average of 21,434 wildfires in this time, but almost double the average acres burned of 1,028,918.

Wildland fire is a natural process. If you live in or near the wildlands, it will probably happen in your area. Make sure you and your neighbors are prepared. Know what the natural fire cycle is in your area. Have an emergency plan in place and arrange for safety of your family and pets. Ask your local fire managers about the fire history and fire ecology in your area.
Very warm and dry conditions are forecast across the southern Great Basin and Southwest, west of the Divide, with minimum relative humidity of 5-15% followed by poor overnight recovery. Breezy westerly winds will also develop across portions of the Mogollon Rim and Gila Mountains. Hot and dry conditions are also forecast across much of the Florida peninsula where minimum relative humidity will fall below 35%. Showers and thunderstorms will develop on much of the Plains today, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms across portions of the central and northern Rockies. Dry, northerly winds will develop across the Sacramento Valley tonight, while occasional light showers continue in western Washington. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across Upper Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic today as well along a cold front. Scattered showers will develop across much of the central and eastern Interior into portions of south-central Alaska, with isolated thunderstorms for portions of the Interior, while moderate trade winds continue for Hawai’i.
