June 4, 2024 - SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly has passed Assemblymember Evan Low’s (D-Silicon evan low california assemblymemberValley) ACR-195 to recognize the Vietnamese Traditional and Freedom Flag, also known as the flag of Vietnam from 1948-1955 and the former Republic of Vietnam, as the cultural and traditional flag of the Vietnamese American community.

Assemblymember Evan Low reflected on the importance of this recognition:

“I am proud to be able to work with my bipartisan Vietnamese-American legislative colleagues, Assemblymembers Stephanie Nguyen and Tri Ta, to usher in this historic recognition by the California State Legislature acknowledging the flag of Vietnam from 1948-1955 and the former Republic of Vietnam as the cultural and traditional (heritage) flag of our Vietnamese American community. Vietnamese Americans represent the very best of America, and their commitment to the principles of democracy, justice, and the protection and advancement of human rights has always been unwavering.”

After North Vietnam forces overthrew the Republic of Vietnam on April 30, 1975, known as the “Fall of Saigon” and “Black April”, more than 1 million refugees and immigrants from the former Republic of Vietnam immigrated to the United States. Today, nearly 800,000 Vietnamese Americans call California home.

With ACR-195, the California State Legislature joins the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara in recognizing the Vietnamese Traditional (heritage) and Freedom flag as the cultural and traditional flag of the Vietnamese American community.

ACR-195 next heads for a concurrence vote on the floor of the California State Senate
