Wednesday morning update: SEQUOIA AND KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARKS, Calif - The road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is now open and passable in both lanes of traffic after an emergency road repair was completed Tuesday evening. A sink hole near Stony Creek in the Sequoia National Forest had become visible in one lane of traffic on the Generals Highway with an undermined roadway across both lanes. The hole is temporarily repaired with gravel and work is planned to continue this week to permanently repair the roadway with asphalt. During the continued roadwork travelers can expect a single lane closure in the work area. Travelers are encouraged to drive cautiously and observe road work signs in the area. June 5, 2024 - National Park Service officials report the road between Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks is closed for emergency road repair.
A sink hole near Stoney Creek in the Sequoia National Forest has become visible in one lane of traffic on the Generals Highway and there is undermined roadway across both lanes.
The hole is near a roadway area that was severely damaged during winter storms in 2023.
Crews will attempt to make repairs, but it is unclear whether the road will be reopened by tomorrow.
