July 10, 2024 – Fresno County Sheriff's Office officials report that at around 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 6th, a man lost his kayak while floating the Kings River, near Adams and Kings River Road in Parlier. He and his dog safely made their way atop a downed tree in the water while a friend contacted the Sheriff’s Office. Two of our boating deputies responded to his location and picked him and his dog up. The deputies also helped retrieve his kayak and safely sent he and his pup back downstream.
An important note in this case is that the dog was wearing a life jacket. Although many dogs have great swimming skills, even the best can become overwhelmed by the conditions of lakes and rivers. There have been many instances where pet owners drown while trying to save their furry friends, so a life jacket will give dogs the strength to stay afloat and make it easier for them to be rescued.
Don't forget about yourself, we humans should always be wearing life jackets as well. Invest in a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket, make sure it fits you properly and it is fully secured. And remember, STAY OUT of the water if you are not an experienced swimmer.
