Homicide Investigation

July 31, 2024 – Fresno Police Department officials report that on Monday, July 29, 2024, at 5:49 p.m., officers from the Southwest Policing District responded to a physical disturbance in the area of East Balch Avenue and South Callisch Avenue. As officers were responding, another caller advised of a stabbing victim on the scene. When officers arrived, they located 26-year-old Devin McNew on the ground, suffering from severe blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds. They also located a 26-year-old female who was suffering from blunt-force trauma to the head. A third individual, 26-year-old Jonathan Navarro, was also contacted on scene. Navarro had a large laceration to his wrist, which was later determined to have been self-inflicted. All three individuals were transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. McNew was unable to survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased by medical personnel. The female adult and Navarro were treated for their injuries and are expected to survive.

Detectives determined that Navarro and the female had recently ended their ten-year relationship. She and her new boyfriend, McNew, had driven to the location to drop off property belonging to Navarro. While dropping off the property, Navarro and McNew began to fight. During the fight, Navarro stabbed McNew multiple times and struck both McNew and the female several times with a large garden shovel. Once Navarro is discharged from CRMC, he will be booked into the Fresno County Jail for several charges, including Murder and Attempted Murder. Detectives are asking anyone with information to please contact the Fresno Police Department.

Anyone calling with information can remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP (7867). You may also contact Fresno Police Department – Homicide Detective R. Montoya at 559-621-2449 or Detective C. Franks at 559-621-2427.
