August 1, 2024 - WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) helped advance the bipartisan Fire Ready Nation Act out of committee to improve and support wildfire and smoke related readiness and response. This bipartisan legislation, which Rosen helped introduce, will establish a fire weather services program within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to improve collaboration between federal and non-federal entities and bolster research and development for early detection and forecasting systems to help communities prepare for potential wildfires. It also includes provisions from Senator Rosen’s bipartisan FIRE Act that improves wildfire data collection and enhances wildfire and smoke monitoring.

“As communities in Nevada confront the risks and dangers associated with wildfires, I’m working to increase our readiness and strengthen our response in order to keep Nevadans safe,” said Senator Rosen. “This bipartisan legislation will help protect communities in our state by increasing wildfire forecasting services and capabilities. I’ll continue working across the aisle to make sure Nevada has the resources and tools we need to fight wildfires.”

Senator Rosen has been leading the efforts to reduce wildfire risk and protect Nevada communities. Senator Rosen helped introduce bipartisan legislation to permanently raise the overtime pay cap for wildland firefighters. Earlier this year, she announced that more than $27.6 million in federal funding is being delivered to help prevent wildfires in Forest Service areas, including in Washoe, White Pine, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral, and Elko Counties, helping to reduce wildfire risk for communities in the region. Additionally, she introduced the National Wildland Fire Risk Reduction Program Act to improve sensing technologies for wildfires and standardize data collection to enhance our national response to these disasters.
