August 2, 2024 – Fresno Police Department officials report that on Thursday, July 18, 2024, just after 10:30 p.m., officers from the Southeast Policing District responded to the area of East Woodward Avenue and Ninth Street for a two round Shot Spotter activation. As officers were responding to the scene, a 9-1-1 call came in reporting there were two gunshot victims. Officers arrived and found 21-year-old Darius Lopez, who had gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body. They also found a 19-year-old female, who had a gunshot wound to her lower body. Both victims were transported to Community Regional Medical Center for medical treatment. Lopez did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 11:12 p.m. The 19-year-old female is listed in stable condition.
Homicide detectives responded to the scene and learned that Lopez and the female were inside a vehicle when an unknown gunman approached on foot and shot at them. At this time, the motive for the shooting has not been determined, and detectives are canvassing the nearby area for witnesses and surveillance footage.
