On August 1, predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center released the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook for August through November. For additional information about the current outlook visit the Outlook page on the NICC site.
A new fuels and fire behavior advisory has been issued for Colorado's Front Range and Eastern Wyoming. There are already advisories in place for Southwest Oregon, the region east of the Cascades in Oregon and Washington, Nevada, Southern Idaho, Utah, and California. Residents, travelers, or workers on their way to any of these states should be advised and familiarize themselves with the elevated risks.
With large wildfires burning in 12 states it's important to have an evacuation plan in place for your family and pets. Do you know the 6 Ps for evacuation when a wildfire is in the area?
- People and pets
- Papers, phone numbers, and essential documents
- Prescriptions, vitamins, and eyeglasses
- Pictures and irreplaceable memorabilia
- Personal computer hard drives and disks
- “Plastic” (credit cards, ATM cards) and cash
Having the 6 Ps part of your Wildfire Action Plan will help when leaving your house quickly.
A drier southwesterly flow is forecast for the Northwest, California, and western Great Basin Sunday. Afternoon southwesterly sustained winds of 10-18 mph with gusts 20-30 mph amid relative humidity of 10-20% will develop through the Cascade gaps and along the east slopes of the Sierra. Breezy and dry westerly sustained winds near 20 mph gust 25-40 mph are likely across Wyoming creating elevated conditions. Isolated mixed wet and dry thunderstorms are likely to be ongoing in east-central Idaho into western Montana, with isolated thunderstorms redeveloping in east-central Idaho into southwest Montana and Wyoming in the afternoon. Near and east of the Divide in Montana, scattered mainly wet thunderstorms are expected, with isolated to scattered mainly wet thunderstorms are forecast for the Southwest, eastern Great Basin, and West Slope. An isolated mixed wet/dry thunderstorm or two remain possible over central Oregon and central Nevada. A drier southerly return flow is likely to develop across the central and southern Plains Sunday as temperatures remain above normal. Winds are not expected to be critical, but areas of increased initial attack remain possible as relative humidity falls to as low as 15% in west Texas and Oklahoma, with single digits in the central High Plains. Otherwise, scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely in the northern Plains, Northeast, and Mid- Atlantic. Heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding are expected in Florida due to Tropical Storm Debby, which will approach the northwest Florida coast after midnight tonight.
