August 5, 2024 – Yosemite National Park officials report that more than 325 million people annually visit national parks for inspiration, relaxation, and recreation. The Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) aims to improve and update national park infrastructure to provide equitable and accessible recreational opportunities.

In Yosemite, The Ahwahnee hotel, perhaps the most iconic of our historic assets, is undergoing a $35 million GAOA-funded seismic strengthening project to address vulnerabilities. The project includes adding structural bracing and shear walls in the dining room and kitchen, reinforcing fireplaces and stone chimney, and replacing windows with safety-tempered glass. Modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems will be installed, and fireproofing, insulation, and utilities will be upgraded to meet current safety codes.

While this rehabilitation work is necessary for the future of this National Historic Landmark hotel, strict preservation standards necessitate a specialized skill set. “It’s like a completely different kind of construction than building new. We’re not just protecting a building; we’re safeguarding a piece of American history,” says Randal Corral, a project manager at Yosemite.

The fourth anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act provides an opportunity to celebrate the legislation's impact on Yosemite and other public lands. Funding to complete large-scale maintenance projects is crucial to ensuring Yosemite remains safe and accessible for future generations of visitors. By revitalizing park infrastructure, we also strengthen local economies, create jobs, and enhance the present visitor experience.
