What you need to know: Governor Gavin Newsom congratulated California’s Olympians following the end of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. He and the First Partner met Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Olympians, and Olympic staff at Los Angeles International Airport as they returned from Paris this afternoon. Los Angeles is hosting the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
August 13, 2024 - Los Angeles, California – On Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom congratulated California’s Olympians on their 22 
medals – including six gold medals – as they returned home from Paris. One hundred twenty-one of the 594 athletes from the United States are from the Golden State – the most of any state. The Paralympics begin in Paris on Wednesday, August 28.
Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom were at Los Angeles International Airport to greet Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, 40 Olympic athletes, and members of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee as they returned from Paris, France following the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic Games. Mayor Bass carried with her the official Olympic flag back to Los Angeles. The 2028 Summer Olympic Games are coming to Los Angeles in 2028.

Newsom support for Olympians
In October 2022, Governor Newsom signed AB 2747, legislation to provide in-state tuition eligibility for U.S. Olympians and Paralympians training in California, a program which began in January 2023.
LA28
The LA28 Games will mark Los Angeles’ third time hosting the Olympic Games – previously hosted in 1984 and 1932 – and first time hosting the Paralympic Games. Los Angeles is expected to host more than 15,000 athletes in 2028 as it welcomes Paralympians and Olympians from around the world to compete on the biggest stage that sports have to offer.
The LA28 Games are independently operated by a privately funded, non-profit organization with revenue from corporate partners, licensing agreements, hospitality and ticketing programs and a significant contribution from the International Olympic Committee.
