August 15, 2024 - By Matt Carmichael - The Ipsos Consumer Tracker asks Americans questions about culture, the economy and the forces that shape our lives. Here's one thing we learned this week.
Why we asked about confidence under different administrations: With Kamala Harris now in the race for president, we wanted to revisit some questions we’ve asked since the 2020 election cycle. We’ll ask about a few more topics next wave, too.
What we found: As many years of polls have found, the economy is typically the top issue for people when they vote. And typically, people vote for the candidate they think will perform best on the issues they care about. So it’s good news for President Trump that he’s out-performing Vice President Harris on a number of economic measures like how confident people are in being able to pay their bills or grow their savings. But Harris has a slight edge in the overall confidence in “Your family’s future wellbeing” and “the future of democracy in the U.S.” and is neck-and-neck on several other issues. Notably, she’s doing much better than President Biden was on most of these issues when we asked in March. As mentioned, we’ll ask about a few more topics next wave and do a full comparison.
