Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten teacher Chelsea Stillwell sent small baggies home early in the week and asked students to bring them back to school on Thursday filled with 100 of something. Students showed their classmates and talked about what they brought.
Another favorite activity was writing from 1 to 100 and then counting 100 pieces of cereal to make a 100th day of school necklace.
Ms. Stillwell's students also had a contest to see how many times they could write their name in 100 seconds. And they stacked 100 cups. They made a class chart of things they wished they had 100 of and things they were glad they didn't.
First and second grade teacher Wendy Baumann also had a number of fun activities ready for her students to do to celebrate the big day.
Each morning during Calendar Time, students have been adding a penny to their money chart. Once they have 10 pennies, they exchange them for a dime. On Friday, they exchanged their 10 dimes for a 1 dollar bill.
Next, they brainstormed the many addition and subtraction sentences that equal 100. Mrs. Baumann was impressed with the level of difficulty students came up with -- some even thought of multiplication sentences!
The students read five books each and charted them on a class poster using tally marks.
To commemorate the day, Mrs. Baumann's students designed their own t-shirts. Even the teachers got in on the act. Ms. Stillwell and Mrs. Baumann had on their own special 100th Day shirts.
The students brought in 100 Mystery Items. They concealed their items and read 3 clues to the class. The class then had 3 tries to guess the item. Some of the items were Legos (a very popular choice this year), rice, pasta, pennies, candy, toy cars, and 100 ounces of Gatorade! The students loved the game and the creative clues.
Finally, Mrs. Baumann's students spent their afternoon attending their Rotation Classes: Technology, Garden and P.E. In P.E. they completed 100 of a number of exercises.
