Opportunity for Musicians
September 6, 2024 – The Mariposa Yosemite Symphony Orchestra is seeking string-instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass) and percussion-playing musicians as it prepares to begin rehearsals for its landmark 20th Anniversary Season.
Now in its 23rd year, the orchestra is based in Mariposa and rehearses on Monday evenings in the Band Room of Mariposa County High School, located at 5074 Old Hwy N, Mariposa, CA 95338. Rehearsals are normally held from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
The orchestra performs three annual concerts in Yosemite National Park, the only symphony orchestra in Yosemite's 134-year-history afforded that honor. The MYSO also performs three concerts in the Mariposa area. Its 20th Anniversary Season-Opening Weekend of Concerts will be on Saturday, October 26 (Mariposa, at 7:00 P.M.) and in the Garden Terrace at Yosemite Valley Lodge as a 2:00 P.M. matinee the next afternoon on Sunday, October 27.
The orchestra's policy since its founding in 2002 is to welcome strings of nearly any level of proficiency beyond beginners. Musicians of all ages are welcome, and the orchestra's first concert on December 21, 2002, included one first-violin stand with an 83-year-old experienced violinist with his 8-year-old stand partner. Both musicians learned a great deal from one another, in orchestral/instrumental proficiency, but also in life experience and the reminder of the energy bestowed upon the young. The orchestra demonstrates one of the greatest ways to increase one's own proficiency as the less experienced are partnered with seasoned professional musicians and teachers, serving in part as a youth orchestra for this region. From its founding by music director/conductor Les Marsden, the MYSO has been established as a family of warm, welcoming musicians, always helpful and understanding.
