September 18, 2024 – Grass Valley, CA – The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) received several 911 calls just before 3:00 pm on Monday, September 16, 2024, reporting a disturbance and gunshots heard coming from a Conifer Lane home. One of the calls came from the victim, reporting they needed medical assistance for a gunshot wound to the neck. Upon deputies’ arrival, the victim was contacted near the residence and transported to nearby paramedics. Paramedics began treatment of the victim and transported her by ambulance to the hospital.

The victim advised that the suspect was last seen in the residence, and that two additional family members, including a young child, were also in the home. NCSO Deputies established a perimeter and evacuated nearby residences with assistance from the Grass Valley Police Department. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded with a helicopter which was later relieved by the Sacramento Police Department when CHP needed to refuel. A woman and child were able to safely exit the home, while deputies attempted to contact the suspect, who was believed to still be in the residence and potentially armed.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail (SED) and Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT) responded to the scene, along with the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office new Bearcat vehicle which was used to bring SED personnel into the perimeter of the active incident. Investigators from the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office also responded to assist. A search warrant was obtained, and drones from the Grass Valley Police Department and later the Placer County Sheriff’s Office were deployed to conduct a closer inspection of the residence. The drone revealed one person down and unresponsive in the residence. The SED team then entered the home and found the suspect appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect, a 62-year-old Grass Valley man, was extracted and taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 7:00 pm. The male was identified as David Peter Weiss and next of kin was notified.

The victim, a 65-year-old Grass Valley woman, suffered several gunshots wounds affecting her neck, face, and back and was in stable condition. This incident remains under active investigation.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office sincerely appreciates the cooperation of the residents in the area who were understanding of the needs of law enforcement who responded to the scene and the allied agencies who came to our aid.
