California Climate Action Corps and Eleven Eleven Foundation unite to plant 90,000 trees and native plants in honor of Dr. Jane Goodall’s 90th birthday
September 26, 2024 - SAN PEDRO, Calif. — In honor of Dr. Jane Goodall’s 90th birthday, California Climate Action Corps and Eleven Eleven Foundation have committed to planting 90,000 trees and native plants across California.
During an International Day of Peace celebration in Los Angeles, California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday, alongside California Climate Action Corps fellows, joined Dr. Goodall and her youth-action program of the Jane Goodall Institute, Roots & Shoots, for a native planting service project at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro.
“We are excited to celebrate Dr. Jane Goodall’s life and legacy by embracing her vision of a healthier planet,” said California Chief Service Officer Josh Fryday. “This ambitious initiative embodies Dr. Goodall’s passion for conservation and reinforces her belief that when we put local communities at the heart of conservation, we improve the lives of people, animals and the environment.”

“I’m honored by this California Climate Action Corps community-based initiative to plant 90,000 trees and native plants in my name,” said Dr. Goodall. “This highlights the power of individuals who come together to protect and preserve nature in their own communities and help mitigate the effects of climate change.”
Since launching this initiative on Dr. Goodall’s birthday in April 2024, the California Climate Action Corps has already planted nearly 50,000 trees and native plants. This progress has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Eleven Eleven Foundation alongside dedicated volunteers and partners throughout the state.
“California Climate Action Corps exemplifies Dr. Jane Goodall’s lifelong lessons in environmental stewardship. The Eleven Eleven Foundation is proud to support this initiative, which demonstrates the impact of scaling local climate actions while honoring Dr. Goodall’s remarkable work,” said Wendy Abrams, Co-Founder and CEO at Eleven Eleven Foundation.

The Jane Goodall Institute is also a partner with California Volunteers, Office of the Governor on the Climate Action Counts campaign which aims to encourage one million Californians to pledge to take simple climate actions in their homes and communities.
Those taking the pledge join hundreds of California Climate Action Corps fellows in efforts to combat the effects of climate change. Governor Gavin Newsom launched California Climate Action Corps four years ago as the nation’s first state-level climate service corps with the mission of empowering Californians to take meaningful climate action.
