Ashes Fall, Legends Rise.
September 26, 2024 – Mariposa County Sheriff's Office officials sadly announce the passing of Retired K9 Arthur.
Our hearts are with Sergeant Brian Lunquist as our office mourns the loss of Retired K9 Arthur.
Arthur was born in October of 2010 in the Czech Republic and is a Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd cross.
He served under Sheriff Doug Binnewies from August 15th, 2012, to November 1st, 2017, with pride. His statistics are extremely impressive and include over 450 deployments as he was cross trained in apprehension, 27 different bomb detection odors, tracking, and evidence. Arthur spent a total of 2,160 hours training to serve this community at his absolute best.
Additionally, he was called upon by the Secretary of Defense and Congress, while also receiving an accommodation from the National Park Service for assisting when President Obama visited. Arthur is still the most decorated K9 in Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office history.
Even after retirement, he still brought a wave of joy to the office when he would stop in and say hi.
Arthur passed away at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24th surrounded by his lifelong handler Sergeant Brian Lunquist, his wife Jenny, and their daughter Brinley.
“More than a partner, always a friend.”
Arthur’s legacy lives on, as he paved the way for our K9 division to blossom.
Forever in our hearts,
The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office
