Inmate Escape

September 28, 2024 – Plumas, CA – Plumas County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Friday morning, 39-year-old inmate Caleb PCSO escapee DuerrDuerr escaped from the Plumas County Jail during a scheduled recreation period. Duerr managed to breach the chain-link fence surrounding the recreational area, allowing him to flee the facility. Upon discovering his escape, the Plumas County Sheriff's Office launched an immediate and coordinated response, enlisting the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies.

We quickly sought the support of nearby law enforcement, including the California Highway Patrol, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Division. As the search expanded, additional resources were brought in, including K9 units from the Sierra, Butte, Yuba County Sheriff's Offices, and air support provided by the California Highway Patrol's Air Operations Division.

Caleb Duerr was last seen near the intersection of County Road A23 and Highway 70. At this time, his exact location remains unknown, but we are actively following all leads. Search efforts are ongoing, with teams continuing to work to locate him.

It’s important to note that, although a new correctional facility has been constructed, no inmates have yet been relocated to the new facility. This escape took place in the old jail. We have also alerted law enforcement agencies across Northern California and Northern Nevada to assist in the search for Duerr.

We ask the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings or suspicious activity related to Caleb Duerr immediately to the Plumas County Sheriff's Office.

Regarding the use of the Genasys Emergency Alert System, it is important to recognize the extraordinary efforts of our sole on-duty dispatcher at the time of the incident. In addition to managing routine calls, the dispatcher worked tirelessly to mobilize resources, notify neighboring agencies, and coordinate responding units. The emergency alert was sent out in just under an hour after the escape was confirmed, following the arrival of additional dispatch personnel. While we understand that an earlier alert would have been ideal, our team worked efficiently under the circumstances to ensure public safety and situational awareness.

Further updates will be provided through our official communication channels. We thank the community for their cooperation and understanding during this challenging situation.
