September 28, 2024 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler (both D-Calif.) have announced that the Senate unanimously passed their bill to rename San Francisco’s 50 United Nations Plaza Federal Building as the “Senator Dianne Feinstein Federal Building,” after the late California Senator and former San Francisco Mayor Dianne Feinstein. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives.

The six-story, 350,000-square-foot building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is home to the U.S. General Services Administration’s regional headquarters for the Pacific Rim Region. It was constructed in 1936 and renovated in 2013 to upgrade building systems, restore historically significant interiors and the central courtyard, and redesign office workspace. 

“Senator Feinstein was a relentless advocate for the people of California, dedicating her life to serving the Golden State and her beloved hometown of San Francisco,” said Senator Padilla. “Renaming a federal building at the heart of the San Francisco Civic Center in her honor — just steps away from where she served as the first female mayor of San Francisco — cements her legacy of leading with strength and shattering barriers. I’m glad to see the Senate come together to honor Senator Feinstein’s enduring legacy after a lifetime of public service.”

“Senator Feinstein was a trailblazer and tireless advocate who dedicated her life to serving the people of California,” said Senator Butler. “I am excited to see the Senate take this important step to honor Senator Feinstein’s legacy and memorialize her in the heart of the city that she called home.” 

Following Senator Feinstein’s passing, Senator Padilla and his colleagues unanimously passed a resolution to honor her life and legacy, adjourning the Senate to allow members to travel to her funeral services out of respect for her memory. The resolution recognized Senator Feinstein as the first woman and longest serving U.S. Senator to represent California and the then-longest serving female senator in the history of the United States. Padilla and Butler also introduced bills to rename a San Francisco post office and a Joshua Tree Visitor Center after the late Senator.
